Day 1:
The start of our journey. We were hiking up the Rongai Route, a little used route around
the northeastern flank Kilimanjaro.
Apparently from the writing
on the side, a Japanese bus? I recognize some of
the characters now. It was a pretty decent bus. Roomy at
first. Just the 5 of us hikers (Judy and daughter
Noel, Josh, Gary and I) and 5 or so porters and
guides. But that would change soon enough. The bus
trip took us from the southeastern edge of Kilimanjaro,
around to the northeastern side of the mountain on the
border with Kenya. The road also started out smooth enough. For the
first hour, we traveled on a nicely paved, smooth
asphalt road.
We then stopped by the main entrance into the
Kilimanjaro area at the start of the Marangu Route.
It is the most heavily used route. You must stop
there to obtain your climbing permits, and for us, to
obtain more porters and supplies. We ended up with
about 12 porters on the bus, along with lots of food. |
